About the Registry

The Survivors Circle for Reproductive Justice is launching a membership registry to serve as the official record of forced sterilization of Indigenous people in Canada. The registry will include the stories and records of Indigenous women, men, Two-Spirit, and transgender people in Canada who have experienced forced sterilization. The protections and privacy of all data and archived stories follow the First Nations principles of Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession (OCAP) and applicable privacy laws.

The registry will be a collection of data while preserving for survivors and their families the memory of forced sterilization as it has been experienced. While the survivors and/or their families will be able to choose how their story is used, research and data will help to determine how many Indigenous women, men, Two-Spirit, and transgender people have been impacted over history and will lead to valuable research on preventative measures that can be implemented in systems to ensure this harm is never experienced by Indigenous people again.

FAQ

  • The registry is for Indigenous women, men, Two-Spirit, and transgender people who are survivors of forced sterilization.

  • Any Indigenous First Nations, Inuit, and Métis individual who identifies as a survivor of forced or coerced sterilization, regardless of gender or sexual orientation, may be eligible for support.

    • The registry has strict policies and guidelines regarding privacy and confidentiality. Any personal information you share when registering will be protected according to the First Nations principles of Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession (OCAP). This means each individual who comes into contact with the registry has the right to determine how, when, and by whom their information can be used.

    • No information will be used without your consent or involvement in the process.

    • When seeking services and registering with the Survivors Circle, the staff and team will prioritize your safety, control, and understanding of the work undertaken.

    • The survivors will decide when and where they will participate in activities and initiatives of the Survivors Circle.

    • Trauma-informed policy, safeguards, and principles are implemented in all support, events, and activities. 

    • Individual survivors who register and receive funds from the Survivors Circle for Reproductive Justice will receive support, not red tape. Our administration takes on the responsibility of accountability in a way that protects your confidentiality and privacy.
